Floating Cover Systems

Raven floating cover systems serve in numerous applications including water protection, anaerobic digestion, methane/biogas gas collection, odor, evaporation and algae control, leachate containment while keeping rain and snowmelt out among many other functions.

Raven custom floating cover systems are used in a variety of industries including Landfills, Potable and Industrial Water Storage, Wastewater, Agricultural, Oil & Gas, and many more. Raven has helped to design and install traditional-defined sump-style floating cover systems, as well as develop new patented and patent pending designs for Frac Tanks, Above Ground Storage Tanks (or AST’s), Clarifiers and Insulated Anaerobic Digestion reservoir covers.

Advantages to an Enclosed System

  • Cleaner Water — The liquid is completely encapsulated, keeping it consistently clear.
  • Greater Chemical Stability — As evaporation is prevented and environmental pollution is blocked, water will remain more chemically stable - for potable water, this means less chlorine use while greatly reducing the possible formation of trihalomethanes (or THM’s) that threaten water safety.

How it Works

  • Cover materials are installed over the slopes and floor of the reservoir, tank or cell and are attached and sealed around any structures.
  • Continuous runs of weights consisting of sand filled tubes are secured to the cover in a pre-determined geometric pattern that has inter-connected legs with branches extending to the far corners of the reservoir.
  • As the covered reservoir fills, the ballast lines will pull slack cover material into storm water collecting sumps that define and deepen as interior water levels continue to rise.
  • Areas bounded by the weight defined sumps and/or the reservoir’s perimeter are called “plates”.
  • The weighted sumps cause the cover 'plates' to be in tension helping rain water to collect within sumps as well as allowing personnel to walk almost anywhere over the cover system.
  • Encapsulated foam floats are installed on the cover parallel to the weights just outboard of the sump area for enhanced sump definition, safety and other places for common walkways.
  • Access hatches, air vents, and storm water removal sump pumps are added into the design criteria as needed. Life expectancy of this cover may exceed 20 years pending material selections.
